The History of Biking on Hilton Head: From Resort Paths to Gold-Level Glory Island LifeTeam | March 23, 2026

Hilton Head Island's world-class bike network—over 200 miles of shaded, flat paths—has deep roots in tourism and advocacy. From 1960s resort loops to today's national awards, it's why families rent our cruisers and e-bikes for epic adventures. Here's the full story.

Resort Beginnings (1960s-1980s)

Development exploded post-1950s bridge, with pioneers like Sea Pines adding private bike paths amid oaks and lagoons. These connected beaches to Harbour Town, drawing cruisers early. By 1986, public additions like South Forest Beach made biking accessible island-wide.

Advocacy Ignites (2000s)

Squeaky Wheels bikers formed in 2006, birthing the 2011 Bicycle Advisory Committee. That year, Hilton Head snagged Silver Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) status—the League of American Bicyclists' nod for infrastructure and safety (SC's top). Bike Walk Hilton Head Island fueled education and events.

Gold Era: Today's 72-Mile Marvel

Now boasting 72 town-maintained paths (paved, multi-use) + 50 resort miles + 12 beach stretches, it's Gold BFC renewed—one of 480 nationwide. Expansions continue, like recent Bluffton connectors.
